UCU Student drowns into Swimming pool on drunken night

A dark cloud has covered the community at Uganda Christian University-UCU after a student drowned and died in a swimming pool.

Nathan Kamanzi, a third-year student of Human Resource Management drowned on Thursday evening in a swimming pool at Hasteh Royale Hotel, about 3 kilometres from the university campus. 

Hasteh Royale hotel which is still under construction, is located at Njerere village in Mukono Municipality. Despite being under construction, the hotel site has an operational swimming pool and pool table centre. 

UCU Communications and Marketing Manager Walter Washika, says they received information that the deceased, together with three other students, were drunk before jumping into the swimming pool, at the time the tragedy occurred. 

The deceased was later rushed to the UCU clinic for treatment but died upon arrival.

According to Dr Robert Kajubi a staff at the UCU clinic, the rescue teams are to blame for transporting the student on a motorcycle from the swimming pool, where the accident occurred, to the clinic. 

The hotel management has since suspended operations until investigations into the incident are completed.  
Rogers Sseguya the Mukono District Police Commander says investigations into the matter are ongoing.
